NECC 2004:
Solutions online for teaching reading and English

Audrey Miller

At the National Education Computing Conference 2004 I discovered an online software product, Click' READ Phonics, that develops reading skills in a second language.

Although this product is in English, I saw an unquestionable potential for the development of competence in English as a second language.

Indeed, as children learn the sounds and the basic sentences in English, they are also exposed to a broad new vocabulary. Getting two birds with one stone!
In short, ClickN READ Phonics is entirely online and progress is made stage by stage over the course of 100 lessons. All information, statistics and performances are recorded on the web so that teachers can access and thus follow the progress of the pupils. Individual reports contain information on the errors which are made in a given lesson, while a general report provides an overview so that school or home users can easily detect general weaknesses and intervene.

The process requires the student to recognize the letters, then sounds and syllables, followed by entire sentences and short texts.

Since ClickN READ Phonics is delivered via the web, work at school can continue at home, providing more opportunities for improvement or enrichment. One of the advantages of the web site, compared to certain software on CD-ROM, is that it is possible to go directly to a specific lesson, bypassing the earlier lessons. This allows home users to quickly access the correct exercise at home.

Armie Carabet, CEO of ClickN KIDS, also adds that children naturally acquire typing skills as they use the keyboard to answer questions.

All pedagogy behind ClickN READ Phonics is in conformity with the American federal program "No Child Left Behind", an extremely interesting initiative which provides that all the children can read by the 3rd year of the primary education.

A home subscription to ClickN READ Phonics costs $59.85 US$ for the first student and additional students, cost $19.95 US per student. For the school version, costs per student decrease with quantity.
