Summary
The ClickN READ Phonics program has proven to be a viable online remediation tool which is closely linked to the DoDEA reading and language arts curriculum in grade one and grade two. The ClickN READ Phonics program helps students practice necessary reading and language arts skills. Since the program is distributed over the Internet there is little technical support needed to administer the program. Teachers are kept informed on the progress of their students by online assessment reports for each student. The 100, 20-minute lessons provide a learning environment that best fits the interest and developmental levels of the students. ClickN READ Phonics fits nicely into the classroom environment as a classroom center. Students are highly motivated when they use the ClickN READ Phonics program. When students use the ClickN READ Phonics program little intervention from the teacher is needed.

Background Information
ClickN READ Phonics program was received in mid February 2005 and the 100 student licenses were deployed across 18 teachers at the school. The program was targeted for use with students who needed additional practice with reading and language arts skills. The program was primarily used in the classroom at computer centers but at times the program was used in the computer lab when the teachers visited the lab with their students.

Selection of students to use the ClickN READ Phonics was based on the students need to receive additional practice and instruction on basic reading and language arts skills. The online SRI test score was one indicator used to determine if the student should use the ClickN READ Phonics program.

Additionally, the learning resource teachers were also given accounts for all of their students which allowed students with special needs to be able to use the program both in their regular classroom as well as in their resource classroom.

Test Results: Scholastic SRI Scores
The results of the program have been remarkable. Based on data from the results of the recent SRI reading test conducted in early May 2005 and compared to the baseline test data from the same test conducted in September 2004 the following gains were achieved by students in the reading and language arts area:

The average school gain on the SRI test was +119 points.

Students who significantly used the ClickN READ Phonics program on average scored +18 points higher than the average school gain.

The average range of scores varied from a high of +197 to +68 yet the total gain for the 88 students studied in the data collection scored +18 points higher than the average schools gain.

The scores compared were those of students who were selected to use ClickN READ Phonics because their teacher felt that they needed the additional practice to learn the needed skills as the initial online SRI score indicated a low score.

Results of the Teacher Survey
The teachers who participated in the use of the ClickN READ Phonics program were asked their impression of the program. After using the program teachers were asked to complete a 12-question questionnaire about their impression of the ClickN READ Phonics program.

Here is a summary of the questionnaire responses from 10 teachers using the ClickN READ Phonics program
70% of the teachers indicated that between 1-5 students used ClickN READ Phonics in their classroom.

70% of the students who used the ClickN READ Phonics program used the program between 3 - 5 days during the week.

70% of teachers using the program felt that the ClickN READ Phonics program was closely aligned to the DoDEA reading and language arts curriculum.

100% of the teachers felt that the ClickN READ Phonics lessons were appropriate with the kind of remediation students needed for additional practice of the language arts skills.

80% of the teachers observed that that the ClickN READ Phonics program created high motivation in their students as they used the program.

90% of teachers reported that students worked independently while using the ClickN READ Phonics program with little teacher assistance.

88% of the teachers felt that the program performed at the same speed across the network as other programs that they use on their student computers.

90% of the teachers reported that the reports within the ClickN READ Phonics were useful in providing valuable information about the progress of each student using the program.

100% indicated that if given the opportunity to use the program in the future that they would be interested in using the program again.


Teachers responded to the following open-ended question with these responses

Question: If given the opportunity to use ClickN READ Phonics again, how would your students benefit from the availability of using the program?

Responses:

.... It would help improve reading scores. The program adjusts to each child so it works better than other programs.

.... Excellent program for reinforcing Early Literacy Skills essential for becoming a successful reader.

.... If it started at the very beginning of the year it would be a great benefit.

.... It would be very helpful if we had it from the beginning of the year when they are just starting to learn to read.

.... The program provides valuable letter sound associations and blending work with frequent repetitions. This helps children become very secure in developing rapid responses when they come to these letters and sounds in words. The program also gives the child both visual and auditory prompts and asks for both visual to auditory responses from the child. It is self paced and gives the child an increasing feeling of success in reading.

.... I believe it would help them a lot, to review, relearn, and reinforce needed skills.

.... This would be a very useful program to start at the very beginning of the school year, as it would give students a good base for the beginning of first grade.
